Media: Responsibility begins with us

Responsibility begins with us

Autor: Florian Berg

On my bicycle journey around the world, I learned how closely beauty and vulnerability are linked –

and how fragile the balance of our planet has become.

I cycled through rainforests that look like living cathedrals of light,

saw oceans whose colours and creatures silence every thought,

and entered landscapes that look as if they are holding their breath.

The earth speaks everywhere – in waves, in the wind, in silence.

But we have forgotten how to listen.

We humans are the only species
that systematically destroys its own habitat.

This knowledge accompanied me like a silent shadow: heavy, shameful and always true.

I saw rivers that tell murky stories.

Forests that have fallen silent.

Beaches where every wave spits out plastic fragments.

The earth is not waiting for hope –

it is waiting for us, for our decisions, for our actions.

And yet, along the way, I met people who bring light into these shadows:

people who protect rainforests,

preserve coral reefs,

give wild animals a future

and inspire others to follow the same path.

People who understand that education is the source of all change –

awareness, knowledge, enlightenment.

Because only those who understand begin to act.

These encounters have shown me:

Hope arises where responsibility is lived.

In small, quiet gestures.

In courageous decisions.

In looking.

Responsibility is not something that can be passed on.

It grows within each of us –

in everyday life, in our appreciation of nature, in questioning our own footprints.

Every action, no matter how small it may seem, has an effect:

it can destroy, change or preserve.

Responsibility is not a burden.

It is an invitation:

to be one with the earth again, instead of standing beside it.

To leave our footprint not as a sign of consumption, but as a trace of mindfulness.

The future is not somewhere ‘out there’ –

we carry it in our daily actions,

in our thoughts,

in our deeds.

We all bear responsibility:

for the life we share,

for the planet that sustains us,

and for the future we shape.

Responsibility begins with us.

Every day, every decision, every action counts.

And from this responsibility grows hope.
